Allowing Wellness
Last week’s article focused on the importance of acceptance. If you missed the article, please visit the archives here: http://loriboothroyd.com/?cat=3
Practicing acceptance is the first step in bringing about deep change. We often resist this notion of acceptance because it can be easily confused with resignation, or a notion of giving up. There is a big difference between acceptance and resignation! When we accept, we are making peace with ourselves in the present moment. Making peace through acceptance puts us in connection with our abilities to think of possibilities and brings us hope for change. Resignation, on the other hand, breeds its own negativity and “bad wolf” thoughts and feelings (read my archived article on the Good Wolf/Bad Wolf Parable to refresh your memory on this concept). Resignation shuts out the belief in possibilities; if we don’t believe in possibilities, we continue the slide downward and begin practicing self-defeating behaviors.
Acceptance of ourselves brings energy and clarity for moving forward. It dispels negativity and creates opportunity for change, and that allows the process of change to become joyful and authentic.
Did you accept my challenge last week of choosing an aspect of your life for practicing acceptance? What showed up for you? What did you notice?
Acceptance quiets our negativity, our self-criticism and our self-defeating behaviors. It allows us to look honestly at our circumstances. When we can look honestly without harsh judgment, we can see possibilities.
Ask yourself this week:
- What do I accept about myself?
- What is the truth of my circumstances?
- What are the possibilities?
- What do I really want in this situation?
- What can I do to support and care for myself?
- What do I want to change?
- What is the first step?
By shifting to a place of curious investigation, kindness and compassion, we are able to free up our emotional energy to make great change and shifts in who we are and in what we do. It isn’t magic… but it begins with the power of acceptance.
